Marseille-Fos Port to take part in blockchain initiative

The Marseille-Fos Port in France will be a part of a blockchain technology project, which is supported by the Interministerial Delegation for the development of the port and logistics axis Méditerranée-Rhône-Saône (MeRS).

The pilot project, which will involve transport of freight on the Mediterranean-Rhône-Saône axis transport corridor, aims to test security of the digital transport chain to improve fluidity, safety and competitiveness of the chain logistics and intermodal freight forwarding on the Rhône / Saône axis. This will eventually allow data sharing between interested parties without superstructure. The project will be run by three companies specialising in logistics, digital solutions for the transport chain and blockchain technology.

Marseille Gyptis International (MGI), a developer of Cargo Community Systems and Port Community Systems for port; BuyCo, a collaborative platform for importers and exporters; and KeeeX, a digital security export, will be providing their services for the project. Financial support for the project has been provided by the Bank of the Territories (Caisse des Dépôts), Voies navigables de France, the Compagnie National Rhone and the Grand Port Maritime of Marseille.

In February, the Port of Rotterdam also announced that it is ready to go with its IoT platform that uses an extensive network of sensors to provide accurate and up-to-date water (hydro) and weather (meteo) data particularly for the planning and management of shipping. The generic building blocks that have now been implemented offer the port a safe and reliable basis for rapid innovation, with access to the latest technologies, including edge computing, real-time analytics, artificial intelligence, hyper-precise data and blockchain. This lays the foundation to facilitate autonomous shipping in the Port of Rotterdam in the future.
